Rockefeller UP adopts CC licenses

Rockefeller University Press has adopted Creative Commons licensing retroactively for their journals: The Journal of Cell Biology, The Journal of Experimental Medicine, and The Journal of General Physiology. Copyright for all of the articles published prior to November 1, 2007 has reverted to the authors (or their estates) for the more than a century of biomedical literature affected by this decision.

Going forward, six months after publication, third parties (that is, anyone who is not an author) can use the material, which is published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License.

More than 300 papers authored by current and former Caltech faculty and staff are affected by this new policy. Henry Lester, Charles Brokaw, and Jean-Paul Revel each have 20 or more papers affected by the new policy. Among former faculty, Elias Lazarides and Lee Hood each published 20 or more affected papers during their affiliations with Caltech.
